Coach's Corner

Each month we’ll use this space as a sounding board for our coaches. This month, we’re introducing the newest member of our coaching team, Julia Burroughs!

Julia Burroughs

Meet Julia Burroughs

Assistant Coach

Julia began rowing in 2012 as an eighth grader at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. Before she started rowing, she was a swimmer, and when her dad suggested she try rowing she told him “Absolutely not, I’m never quitting swimming.” He made her try it anyways and she immediately quit swimming to start rowing and never looked back. She rowed all of high school at IRC, and when she was injured her senior year, she got her first taste of coaching by helping with the novice girls. That summer she coached novice summer camp and fully fell in love with coaching. In the fall she went to Purdue University and rowed for a year with Purdue Crew, but struggled with injury and burnout and ultimately took a break from rowing.

In 2022, after graduating college and moving to Colorado for a year, she moved back to Indianapolis and found herself back at IRC 10 years after she started rowing. She coached the IRC Juniors for 3 years and in the last year also became the boathouse manager, responsible for all the equipment and facilities, and joined the IRC Masters team, getting back into a boat after 5 years of not rowing.

Sophia Cramer

Sophia Cramer

How did Sophia get started in rowing?

Sophia began rowing her freshman year. One day she was paddleboarding with her mom at the lake when the team zipped by. Sophia was mesmerized at the speed of the boat and how everyone worked together. As we were leaving the park that day, we saw the “learn to row” advertisement and signed her up immediately.

Evan Ewing

Evan Ewing

How did Evan get started in rowing?

Evan read Boys In the Boat in 8th grade and it sparked an interest in rowing for him. Sophia Cramer, who was the only other rower at his high school (Parkway South), told him about tryouts in February of his freshman year. He made the team and his love of rowing was born.

Plans After Graduation

Evan will be a freshman this fall at the University of Kansas, studying aerospace engineering. He plans on rowing for their men’s club team.

Favorite Rowing Memories

During Evan’s first Midwest Junior Championship his freshman year, an oar on his boat came loose from its rigging during the race. Definitely a memorable regatta! His senior year, Evan helped write the job description and expectations for team captains. He went on to earn his spot as co-captain with James Palanca and very much enjoyed leading his team. Finally, for his Eagle Scout project his senior year, Evan and a team of Scouts constructed a permanent wind sock at Creve Coeur Lake, within view of the boat house. His goal was to provide a tool for rowers and anyone else using the lake.
