Our competitive Novice Team is made up of high school students ages 13-18 from around the St. Louis area. Every rower is a novice their first year. After that, they may graduate to the Varsity Team. Our junior novice rowers learn the basics of sweep rowing, the terms and calls used in the boat, and how to work together as a team.

Our Season: Rowing is a year-round sport. When we cannot go on the water, we do indoor workouts on the rowing machine.

Fall: Begins after Fall Tryouts in September and runs through January. Typically consists of several 5,000-meter Head Races, including The Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Beginning in late November, practices move indoors and focus on strength and conditioning.

Spring: Begins after Spring Tryouts in February and runs through late May. Consists of several Spring regattas and concludes with racing at Midwest Championships.

Summer: Runs for 3 weeks in August. Experienced novice team members are eligible to participate in this optional summer program.

HOW TO GET STARTED

SUMMER CAMPS

We offer Learn to Row Summer Camps for ages 11-17 in June, July, and August. The camps are ten sessions over a two-week period that cover the fundamentals of rowing. No experience is necessary, but swimming skills are a must. We start our learning on the indoor rowing machine, and then progress onto the water. While attending a summer camp is not a requirement, it can increase the likelihood of success at tryouts.
