A Passion for Sculling

Tricia Kajok

I have been rowing, and a member of SLRC, for over 17 years. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a passion for rowing and more specifically, sculling.

With the transition of winter to spring, I find myself scanning the weather reports for those optimal forecasts. For the sculler, factors like wind, waves, water temperature, and the potential for a storm, play a critical role in deciding whether or not to launch.

There is no better feeling than setting out on the water in a single scull on a beautiful day. Every push away from the dock is filled with the sweet anticipation of rowing just a little stronger, a little faster, and with better technique, than the row before. I have always believed that you are the master of your own destiny in a single scull. There is no one else to blame for a slow or unset boat. It is all you! Some days the weather cooperates and maintaining balance and applying power is effortless. On others, wind and waves become a factor and adjustments in technique must be made.

What I love the most about sculling is that no two rows are the same. I cherish the friendships that I have made during my years of rowing, with people who share the same passion as mine. I am thankful for the sport and always take a moment out of every row to take in the beauty of my surroundings. I give nod to the eagles that roost on the island as I row by, in hope they notice improvement in my form. I remain on the endless pursuit of achieving the perfect stroke and enjoy every minute of the challenge.

Adult rower on the water

April Werner

Adult Rower (since 2025)

What do you love about rowing?

IIt’s a team sport, so we have to rely on each other. I love winning the most! That’s bad, I guess, but I do like to bring home a medal.

How did you get into rowing?

No cardio equipment at the gym was available one day so I got on an erg. I was hooked. (Strange thing is now I hate to erg, but love to row). After a few weeks of erging, I checked out the website for the rowing club. I had always wanted to take classes, so I did it.

What has been your favorite rowing experience/memory?

Racing as stroke in the 5k 4 boat in Nashville, TN. It was hard, but I was determined to do what I could to get us home. We didn’t get a medal, but it was a tough race that I am very proud to have been in.

What is your favorite regatta and why?

Chicago! I love sprinting more than distance. It was my first regatta, so it is my favorite.

What do you like to do when you’re not rowing?

My phone entertains me too much, probably.

How did you get into rowing?

I heard about rowing from some old swimming friends as well as a family friend and decided to try it out.

What has been your favorite rowing experience/memory?

My favorite memory was being able to seat race for youth nationals my novice year and winning it.

What is your favorite regatta and why?

Midwest because it’s what you’re working for all year and where you can see all your efforts come into fruition.

What do you like to do when you’re not rowing?

I like to watch movies, hang out with freinds, and run.
