Junior Rower (since 2024)

What do you love about rowing?

First and foremost, I enjoy the people rowing has brought into my life. Because of this team I have met some of the hardest working people I know.

How did you get into rowing?

My mom rowed in high school in the 90s when the club was still small, she knew Charnsin, when they rowed together. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to sit in on a practice and ride on the launch with him and rowing was always in the back of my mind. During fall of my Sophomore year, I learned of a coaching turnover in my old sport and thought “why don’t I give rowing a try.” By that time, the tryouts had already passed, and I was close to getting my drivers license, so my parents told me I could try out in the spring when I was licensed, and so I showed up to rowing tryouts in the spring with almost no experience, made the team, and now I’m here.

What has been your favorite rowing experience/memory?

My favorite rowing memories are the celebrations we have for each other whether it’s after a big win at a regatta or a small win on the erg. The team is so supportive and I’m so happy I found the club.

What is your favorite regatta and why?

My favorite regatta was Midwests 2024 because all the boats my friends and I were in were so supportive of each other and the energy was amazing!

What do you like to do when you’re not rowing?

When I am not rowing I hang out with my friends a lot, do photography, spend time with my family.

Leah Rothberg

Adult Coxwain (since 2011)

What do you love about rowing?

I love the sport of rowing because of the camaraderie it fosters; knowing that each person is working just as much as their teammates to fight for the finish line. As a coxswain, I like being challenged mentally to react instantly to changing circumstances, and to motivate my crew to perform at their best.

How did you get into rowing?

I was recruited in high school by friends who were already on the team in the Junior program. They said, “you’re short and loud, you should join SLRC and be our coxswain”. Knowing nothing about the sport, but having grown up on boats, I had no hesitation in joining and am so glad I did.

What has been your favorite rowing experience/memory?

I can’t single out any one thing as my favorite, I love every aspect of the sport. From the adrenalineI get from competing at regattas to building, trusting relationships as I help the rowers grow in their skills as individuals, everything about rowing makes it the sport for me.

What is your favorite regatta and why?

In the fall my favorite is the Hooch, and summer it’s Nationals – both regattas bring the same type of environment. I love the competition we get at these regattas – making my job as the coxswain more challenging than at some other regattas. I love seeing the abundance of swag from different vendors – I’m a sucker for great graphic designing and logos merch. And finally I love being surrounded by so many other athletes who are as passionate about the sport as I am.

What do you like to do when you’re not rowing?

I spend time with my two pups, Louie & Harpo, I do Pilates 3x a week, I sit on an alumni board for Mizzou’s Business School, I do graphic design work for the club, and I love socializing, taking care of my plants, and being outside.
