Coach: Sculling
Steve rowed a bit at Dartmouth College, but traded his oar for a budding career as a rock musician after his freshman year (hey, paid the bills). He was reintroduced to rowing in 1992 by his daughter, Olivia, who rowed and sculled for SLRC as a Junior. Olivia also went to Dartmouth and rowed for their freshman and varsity crews for four years. Steve distinguished and further endeared himself to Olivia and all of Dartmouth Women’s Crew by accompanying them to spring training. He brought his single to Oak Ridge and rowed along.
Steve has rowed a single competitively for 13 years and has attended numerous sculling camps and clinics. He has been to one camp so many times that he has been named the camp’s slowest learner. He has lost to some of the fastest scullers in North America, although he has won a few medals. Steve applies his discerning eye during weekly sculling clinics that focus on technique.
Apart from rowing, Steve is a physician on staff at the local VA Medical Center, and he is a faculty member at Washington University School of Medicine. He teaches, sees patients, conducts research on diabetes, and directs the oversight of research activities at the VA. Steve lives with Kathy, who has put up with his shenanigans for more than 40 years. Their horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, parrots and cats have since departed, but they continue to live with their Jack Russell Terriers, Mr. Bean and Miss Blossom, in the Central West End.
